The story of Neighbors:Compassion began in Colorado Springs, Colorado; where a small group of friends were discussing what Christians mean when they talk about the Call of God. Does everyone have a Call on their life? Do Christians have a common calling that can be used as a starting point to find one’s personal purpose in life? They knew that sharing the Gospel is a given and that genorisity is important too, but are there more specific instructions...
The questions above and their answers are at the heart of Neighbors:Compassion. A group of friends consisting of three couples sought after truth, they made the following discoveries from Scripture:
John 13:34-35
“A new command I give you: Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another. By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another.”
James 2:15-16
“Suppose a brother or sister is without clothes and daily food. If one of you says to him, “Go, I wish you well; keep warm and well fed,” but does nothing about his physical needs, what good is it?”
Ephesians 2:10
“For we are God’s workmanship, created in Christ Jesus to do good works, which God prepared in advance for us to do.”
James 1:27
“Religion that God our Father accepts as pure and faultless is this: to look after orphans and widows in their distress and to keep oneself from being polluted by the world.”
As a result of these discoveries the group now had a deeper understanding of the Call of God, but still had no idea what was in store for them. Enter Primetime Television and Oprah’s Big Give. A show where nine individuals took time out of their lives to actively pursue people—find out what challenges they faced—and found a way to help them with one of those challenges. Week after week we watched as people’s lives were touched by this show. And we realized that our Heavenly Benefactor wanted us to bless others in the same way. The riches of His wealth extend way beyond the millions of dollars of Oprah and the corporations that sponsored the “Big Give”. All He needs are individuals, willing to be conduits of His Love and Grace; people, who are willing to set a little time aside and are available to take part in the “Biggest Give” of the Universe. We are His chosen instruments, vessels intended to bring relief to a weary world.
Since we had already been talking about these things as a group we decided that we should draw strength from our numbers and pool our resources to have greater effectiveness. We called ourselves Neighbors:Compassion, and over the next three months we met and built relationships with people in our community. We were first-hand witnesses to the Love of God being poured out like a cool drink of water on a scorching day.
Today Neighbors:Compassion has two operating branches. The first is in Phoenix, Arizona, and the second branch operates from Richmond, Virginia. However, we are always looking for like-minded individuals and groups of people to grow God′s Kingdom in this way. If you are interested in starting a Neighbors:Compassion chapter where you live, please contact us. We will support your efforts in any way we can. Additionally as this website grows, we plan on providing online tools and guidelines to ensure your success.
